When Eve Tarlton marries Nick Morrison, she believes she has achieved the American dream: a nice home, a loving husband, two children, a family dog... But then comes the voice from the stairway of their mountain cabin: "There's evil in this house," the deep voice thunders. "Only you can do what needs to be done to rid this house of the evil that dwells within."

The stepson Eve has acquired is the same age as her own son: a cute little boy with doe-brown eyes and a winning smile. But it doesn't take long for the innocent facade to wear thin, and Michael's true personality to emerge: a blend of anger, confusion, resentment, and envy; a fascination with fire, and the desire to see Eve dead.
